Congress workers injured in clashes over sarpanch polls in Punjab

Chandigarh: The situation in Zira turned tense on Tuesday when Congress workers led by former MLA of Zira constituency and district Congress president Kulbir Singh Zira were on their way to Jeevan Mal Government Model Senior Secondary School, Zira, to file nominations for the panchayat polls when they were attacked with bricks, stones and sticks allegedly by AAP workers to stop them from filing their nominations.

During this time, bullets were also fired and Kulbir Singh Zira was hit on the cheek and the leg and wrist of Gurwinder Singh village Sudan, due to which he was seriously injured. Apart from this, Charanjit Singh, resident of village Kamalwala, Mani resident of Zira, Harpreet Singh Kala of village Mansurdewa, Daljit Singh of village Kacharbhan, Kikar Singh of village Pandori Jattan, Bohar Singh, Gurjant Singh of Wasti Game Wali etc. were seriously injured.

On this occasion, DSP Zira Gurdeep Singh, DSP Naveen Kumar, DSP Fateh Singh Brar, DSP Mahal Singh, SHO Kanwaljit Rai Sharma, SHO Abhinav Chauhan, ASI Surjit Singh fired in the air and water cannons to control the situation.

Congress district president Kulbir Singh Zira alleged that congress party workers were supposed to file papers of sarpanches, but they were detained by the Punjab Police since morning in their house.

He said he was attacked at the place where nominations were filed. All the injured Congress workers, including Kulbir Singh Zira, were admitted to civil hospital Zira for treatment.
