Crackdown on gun-culture, Punjab government cancels licences of 813 weapons

Chandigarh: The opposition is constantly attacking the Punjab government over law and order. After the Ajnala incident, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has been surrounded several times by opposition parties.

Now, the Punjab government is also seen in action mode. In a major action on Saturday, the Punjab government has canceled the licenses of about 813 weapons across the state.
There were a total of 3,73,053 arms licenses in Punjab, out of which 813 licenses have now been canceled.
Gurdaspur in Punjab has the highest number of arms licences at 40,789. District Bathinda comes in second place, where there are 29, 353 arms licenses. Patiala district has 28, 340 arms licenses at number three.
Of the 813 arms licences cancelled by the Punjab government, 87 were from Ludhiana Rural, 48 from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, 10 from Gurdaspur, 84 from Faridkot, 199 from Pathankot, 47 from Hoshiarpur, six from Kapurthala, 235 from SAS Town, 16 from Sangrur, 27 from Amritsar Commissionerate, 11 from Jalandhar Commissionerate office and several other districts.
In November 2022, the Punjab government took a big action to end the ‘gun culture’ in Punjab. In nine days, about 900 arms licenses were canceled and arms licenses of more than 300 people were suspended and show cause notices were issued to them.
They were asked why they needed weapons. Of the 900 arms licences that were cancelled, the highest number of 391 weapons licences were cancelled from Jalandhar district. As many as 146 licences of Ropar, 266 in Nawanshahr, 32 in Mohali, 19 in Tarn Taran, 17 in Kaputhala, 25 in Ferozepur and one in Pathankot were cancelled.
