Farmer commits suicide during police raid over stubble burning
Bathinda News: A farmer in Bathinda, Punjab, reportedly committed suicide amidst cases of stubble burning. The 35-year-old Gurdeep Singh took his life out of fear of facing an FIR. Currently, his body has been taken into custody, and an investigation has commenced. As a result of this tragedy, his mother, wife, and 6-year-old daughter are now destitute.
According to available information, the deceased Gurdeep Singh owned 6 acres of land, which he cultivated to sustain his household. After the paddy harvest, he resorted to burning stubble in his fields. However, when Gurdeep attempted to set fire to his fields, the police intervened. Although he managed to flee at that time, he later took his own life.
The fear of facing an FIR prompted Gurdeep’s drastic actions, says family
The Punjab Police has been taking stringent measures against crop residue burning, and Gurdeep was also being prepared to face an FIR like others. This fear plagued Gurdeep, leading him to take his life, family members said.
Local villagers are now striving to seek government assistance for the destitute family, hoping they can receive some financial support.
