IG Umranangal reinstated in Punjab police after 5 years following HC’s intervention

Chandigarh: IG Paramraj Umranangal, who was suspended for nearly five years, has been reinstated by the Punjab Police. His reinstatement was ordered by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which directed the Punjab Police to reinstate him within 15 days.

However, he has not yet been given a posting and is currently reporting to the DGP.

About five months ago, in February, the High Court had ordered his reinstatement, but even then, he was not reinstated.

Subsequently, Umranangal approached the High Court again. During the hearing, the court reprimanded the government and the police, ordering them to comply with the reinstatement order within 15 days.

The SIT formed in the Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura police firing case had arrested IG Paramraj Singh Umranangal in 2019. Following his arrest, he was suspended. The Punjab Home Department took action after an official notice indicated that the police officer had been arrested and subsequently sent to jail by a court.

In the 29-year-old fake encounter case of Sukhpal Singh, a resident of Kala Afgana village in Gurdaspur district, a case was registered against Paramraj Singh Umranangal and two other policemen in October 2023.

In this case, charges have been filed under sections 166A, 167, 193, 195, 196, 200, 201, 203, 211, 218, 221, 420, and 120B of the IPC at Bhagwantpura district Ropar police station. The SIT is also investigating this case, which is ongoing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
