Punjab DSP convicted for murder: 2 policemen sentenced to life imprisonment

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has convicted a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gursewak Singh and four other policemen for murder in connection with the custodial death of Gamdoor Singh in 1995.

Two of these policemen were sentenced to life imprisonment, while the DSP and two others have been ordered to be produced in court on September 12, where they will be sentenced.

Earlier, the trial court had acquitted the DSP and other accused of the charge of murder. Against this, the Punjab government had filed an appeal in the High Court, on which the High Court convicted the accused.

A division bench of Justices Sureshwar Thakur and Sudipti Sharma said DSP Gursewak Singh can also be convicted under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 34 (compound offense.

Gamdoor Singh and Baghel Singh were detained by the Railway Police, Sangrur on November 14, 1995.

He was released after 9 days of detention, but Gamdoor Singh’s condition was critical. He was rushed to PGI Hospital in Chandigarh where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to the prosecution, during police remand, Gamdoor Singh was severely beaten with sticks by constable Kirpal Singh, causing grievous injuries to his ribs.
