Punjab municipal elections set for December 21

Chandigarh: Punjab’s municipal elections will be held on December 21, with over 37 million voters expected to cast their votes. The electorate comprises 19.55 lakh men, 17.75 lakh women, and 204 other voters. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be utilized for the polls.

The Election Commission has announced changes to the voting schedule, extending the hours from 7 am to 4 pm due to the winter season. Previously, voting took place from 8 am to 4 pm. The elections will cover 381 wards of municipal corporations, and 598 members will be elected to municipal councils.

Candidates can file nomination papers from December 9 to December 12, with December 14 set as the last date for withdrawals. The model code of conduct has been implemented in Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar, Patiala, Phagwara, and 43 municipal council areas.
