SC refuses to accord urgent hearing on PIL on air pollution says ‘Can’t order every farmer to stop burning stubble’

The Supreme Court has refused to accord urgent hearing on a petition related to pollution in Delhi-NCR. Earlier, the court had postponed the hearing to November 10. But today Chief Justice Chandrachud told the petitioner – you want to stop stubble burning. But can we order this for every farmer? Some things can be done by the court and some cannot. We do not think that this matter needs to be heard immediately.

On November 4, advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha had put the matter of severe air pollution in Delhi-NCR in front of the then Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit. He told the court that the AQI has reached the level of 500. The court should intervene to protect the right to life of the people. On this, Chief Justice Lalit had said to put the matter for hearing on November 10.

Which states have the most incidents of stubble burning?

In the petition, information has been given about the data released by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IRAI). According to this report, there were 2,109 incidents of crop residue burning on November 1. Of these, Punjab alone has 1,842 cases. There were 88 incidents of stubble burning in Haryana, 9 in Uttar Pradesh and 1 in Delhi.
