17 dead after consuming spurious liquor in Punjab, CM Mann calls it ‘murder’; announces compensation

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday visited Marri village in Majitha constituency, where he met the families of those who died after consuming spurious liquor. He assured all possible assistance from the government and described the incident as a case of “murder” rather than ordinary deaths.
Mann announced financial aid of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each deceased and said the state government would bear the cost of education for their children.
The chief minister said that 17 people have died so far in the tragedy. He added that strict action has been taken, with two officers each from the police and excise departments suspended. Further investigation is underway.
So far, 17 people have been arrested in connection with the case. Mann said that links of the case have been traced to Delhi and police teams have been sent there to nab more accused.
“Anyone involved in this matter, even if he is an influencer or connected to the government, will not be spared,” he said.
