Additional charges filed against accused in Ambedkar statue vandalism case
Amritsar: Akashdeep Singh, arrested for allegedly vandalizing a statue of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar on Heritage Road in Amritsar, now faces additional charges. Initially booked under eight sections, the police have added more serious provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The amended FIR includes:
Section 152 (Acts prejudicial to sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India)
Sections 61 and 62 (Criminal conspiracy)
Section 2 (Outrage against National Honour)
Section 4 (Damage to public property)
Singh was produced in court on Friday, where the police secured a five-day remand. Advocate Anil Kumar stated that Singh had concealed a national flag in Bathinda, arguing that his actions were not intended to disturb communal harmony. The police are set to present him in court again on Wednesday.
Bhim Army chief vows to raise issue in Parliament
Bhim Army chief and Azad Samaj Party MP Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan visited Amritsar, paying tribute at Ambedkar’s statue and inspecting the site. He criticized the administration’s handling of the case and pledged to raise the matter in Parliament.
