Clashes erupt between police and Congress supporters over Ludhiana MP’s arrest in Punjab
Chandigarh: Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu from Ludhiana was detained by the police and subsequently produced in the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class Tanish Goel. The MP had locked the municipal office a few days prior, leading to the police registering an FIR against him.
Following his arrest announcement on Tuesday, MP Bittu, along with a large number of supporters, including former senior deputy mayor Shyam Sunder Malhotra, district Congress president Sanjay Talwar, and former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, gathered outside the DC office.
A fierce altercation ensued between the police and Congress supporters, with skirmishes occurring over attempts to breach the barricades, resulting in the policemen’s turbans being dislodged.
Subsequently, the police detained 60 to 70 activists, including MP Ravneet Bittu and former ministers Bharat Bhushan Ashu and Sanjay Talwar.
During the incident, MP Bittu expressed that the AAP government aimed to suppress the Congress, but Congress members remained undeterred by the government’s authoritarian tactics.
He said that even if the government resorted to false allegations to incarcerate him, he remained unfazed. Bittu also conveyed his belief that the electorate would rebuke the Aam Aadmi Party government in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
