Drug addict youth sets girlfriend on fire over marriage refusal in Ludhiana

Chandigarh: In a shocking incident in Ludhiana, a 27-year-old woman was set on fire by her boyfriend after she refused his marriage proposal.

The incident took place when the accused, Harshpreet Singh, 28, doused his girlfriend, Jaspreet Kaur, with petrol and set her ablaze before attempting to immolate himself. Both sustained severe burn injuries and have been admitted to Civil Hospital Khanna for treatment.

Jaspreet Kaur, a resident of Samrala and a nurse in Ludhiana, suffered 40 percent burns, while Harshpreet Singh, from Punjabi Bagh Khanna, sustained burns covering 50 percent of his body.

Due to the extent of her injuries, Jaspreet’s hands were badly burnt, forcing the police to take her toe prints for documentation.

The relationship between the two reportedly soured after Jaspreet discovered that Harshpreet was addicted to drugs. Despite distancing herself from him, Harshpreet continued to pressure her for marriage, which led to emotional harassment.

Police have registered a case and plan to arrest Harshpreet once he recovers. The investigation is ongoing.
