Drug case: SIT withdraws notice issued to Majithia

Chandigarh: 1The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the drug smuggling case withdrew the summons issued to Bikram Singh Majithia, making the petition filed by the former minister in the Punjab and Haryana High Court infructuous.

The counsel appearing for the government told the court that the notice under Section 91 of the Criminal Procedure Code with regard to summons for production of documents or any other thing has been withdrawn. Taking note of the affidavit, the bench made it clear that the government would be bound to file an affidavit in this regard before admitting the petition to be dismissed.

It may be recalled that after the SIT sent the notice last month, Bikram Singh Majithia had challenged it in the Punjab and Haryana High Court by his lawyers. However, during the last hearing in the high court, the public prosecutor had referred to the notice issued by the SIT on June 7 and made it mandatory for interrogation and submission of relevant documents.

Majithia had argued that he was being harassed by repeatedly sending summons. After this, the High Court had given him relief from appearing before the SIT till July 8.
