Farmer dies after consuming sulphas tablets at Shambhu border

Chandigarh: Jodh Singh, a 50-year-old farmer from Ratanheri village in Ludhiana district, succumbed to poisoning after consuming sulphas tablets four days ago at the Shambhu border. He passed away at 7 am today at Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, despite efforts by doctors to save him.

On December 14, during a confrontation between farmers and Haryana Police, which involved the firing of tear gas shells on a group of protesters marching towards Delhi, Jodh Singh reportedly consumed the toxic substance in protest against what he considered anti-farmer actions by the government.

He was initially admitted to a hospital in Rajpura but was later referred to Rajindra Hospital due to his critical condition.

Farmer leaders, including Sarwan Singh Pandher, Surjit Singh Phul, Jaswinder Singh Longowal, Manjit Singh Niyal, Manjit Singh Rai, and Balkar Singh Bains, have expressed deep grief over the incident and extended their sympathies to Jodh Singh’s family.

They have also called on the government to provide compensation to the bereaved family.

According to farmer leaders, Jodh Singh’s body will be taken from the hospital to the Shambhu border, where a tribute will be paid by fellow protesters. Following this, his body will be transported to his native village of Ratanheri for cremation.
