Farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, UP, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan arrive at shambhu border to observe 100th day of the agitation
Chandigarh: Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, western UP, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan have started gathering at the Shambhu border to mark the 100th day of the agitation tomorrow.
During the 100-day dharna, a special tribute is being planned to be paid to the 22 ‘martyred’ farmers. This includes 22-year-old Shubhkaran Singh. His picture hangs in several tents, pandals and tractor-trolleys parked at the Shambhu border. Farmers have started coming to the protest site since morning.
However, the temperature is hovering around 45 degrees Celsius and the Meteorological Department has issued a severe heat warning.
Farmer leaders are expecting a gathering of 40,000 farmers. The Punjab Police has also set up nakas to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
Farmers’ leaders Amarjit Singh Mohri and Ashok Bolra said, “We want the legal status of MSP and Dr. Swaminathan’s formula should be implemented. Total loan waiver for farmers and farm labourers, social security of Rs 10,000 per month, justice to farmers of Lakhimpur Kheri and crop insurance scheme at government expense are the major demands.”
