Farmers protest across Punjab against arrests, restrictions on Chandigarh march
Amritsar: The Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee staged a protest at the Golden Gate in Amritsar on Wednesday, burning an effigy of the government in response to the arrests of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) leaders and efforts to prevent them from marching to Chandigarh.
Sarwan Singh Pandher, a leader of the committee, said protests were held at 21 locations, including the Golden Gate, and in 18 districts across Punjab. Farmers expressed anger over what they described as government suppression of their movement.
Pandher accused the Modi-led central government of blocking farmers’ protests in Delhi, while alleging that the Punjab government under Bhagwant Mann was preventing demonstrations in Chandigarh.
He said farmers were attempting to raise their demands democratically, but their right to protest was being curbed, leading to widespread demonstrations and the burning of effigies across the state.
