Farmer’s suicide in Punjab CM home district sparks BJP criticism
Chandigarh: A farmer reportedly died by suicide in Sangrur, the home district of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, over financial distress caused by the non-sale of his paddy crop.
Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar condemned the incident, calling it a stark indictment of the state’s handling of farmers’ grievances.
In a statement posted on social media, Jakhar named the farmer as Jaswinder Singh and attributed his death to frustration over unsold crops and mounting debt.
Jakhar criticized Chief Minister Mann, suggesting that the government’s inaction in supporting farmers has led to tragic outcomes.
“The suicide of farmer Jaswinder Singh in Sangrur, the chief minister’s home district, due to non-sale of paddy and debt, is a painful reminder of the Punjab government’s incompetence,” Jakhar wrote. He urged Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, scheduled to visit Punjab, to focus on addressing the plight of farmers instead of political engagements with local leaders.
