Foreign dreams: On average 9 Punjabis relinquishing their Indian citizenship every day, figures growing rapidly 

New Delhi: Punjabis come second from all over the country among those who relinquish their Indian nationality. The trend of the last nine years shows that on an average 3124 Punjabis have left their land permanently every year. Delhi is at number one in this case, while Punjabis and Gujaratis are walking step by step to become permanent foreign residents. The results of the wings that the study visa from Punjab has given to the youth will be clearly visible in the coming years.
    A total of 2,46,580 Indians have given up their Indian passports after acquiring foreign citizenship during the period 2014 to 2022, according to the Union Ministry of External Affairs.
    The largest number of Delhiites (60,414) are from Delhi. Punjabis (28,717) come in second place. Apart from this, 22,300 Gujaratis have left Indian passports at number three. Only 7,226 residents of neighbouring Haryana fall in this category, while only 1,904 residents of Chandigarh have given up Indian citizenship.
   According to the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955, a citizen of Indian origin cannot hold the citizenship of two countries at the same time, due to which he has to give up the citizenship of one country.
    According to the data of the last nine years, on an average, 9 Punjabis are obtaining citizenship of foreign country every day for the past one decade.
