GST evasion worth Rs 4,167 crore in 5 years; 61 people caught, reveals Centre report

Chandigarh: The Punjab Taxation Department has detected GST evasion of Rs 4,167 crore in Punjab in the last five years. Out of this, the Taxation Department has already recovered Rs 1171 crore. This has been revealed in the data released by the central government.

According to the report, about 61 people were also arrested during this period in different cases. Apart from this, a special campaign was also launched by the department last year to check fake registration and billing.

According to data released by the central government, in the year 2019-20, GST evasion worth Rs 296 crore was detected, of which 200 crore was recovered.

During this, 4 people were also arrested. In the year 2020-21, cases of GST evasion of Rs 715 crore were reported, out of which Rs 299 crore was recovered and 25 people were arrested.

In the year 2021-22, tax evasion of Rs 1522 crore was detected and Rs 164 crore was recovered in it. 27 people were arrested. If we talk about the year 2022-23, then this year 3 people were arrested in different cases. Also, Rs 481 crore GST evasion was detected and Rs 145 crore recovered.
