HC criticizes Punjab Police for filing cancellation report in Lawrence Bishnoi case
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has expressed strong disapproval of the Punjab Police’s handling of the Lawrence Bishnoi case, particularly regarding a cancellation report filed in the Mohali trial court.
The police had recommended quashing the FIR against Bishnoi, which was originally lodged on the High Court’s orders following his interview at CIA Kharar.
The High Court criticized both the SIT and the Punjab government for submitting the cancellation report to the trial court without informing them, despite the court’s prior involvement in overseeing the investigation.
The court questioned, “Why were we not informed about this yesterday?” It noted the inconsistency of the report being submitted in the trial court when the High Court was scheduled to hear the case the next day.
In response, the High Court has halted the proceedings in the Mohali trial court and will determine the next steps, including which agency will continue the investigation. The next hearing is scheduled for October 28.
