Head granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib calls for maintaining dignity of Sikh institutions

Amritsar: Giani Raghbir Singh, head granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib, has said that the dignity of religious places, posts, and institutions should be upheld. His remarks come amid opposition from Sikh organisations following the inter-ministerial committee’s decision to terminate the services of jathedars.

Singh, who was removed as Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht by the committee two days ago, said the current developments are not in the interest of Sikh institutions.

Several Akali leaders have resigned in protest, while Bikram Singh Majithia also expressed his disagreement with the decision last night. He stated that those who understand and respect Sikh traditions are naturally angered by the move.

Singh said that Sikhs regard Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Akal Takht with the highest reverence and accept their directives.

However, when the dignity of these institutions and positions is undermined, he said, it is natural for people to express their protest.
