High Court lifts stay on Dharamkot Municipal council elections

Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has lifted the stay on elections for eight wards of the Dharamkot Municipal Council.

The decision was delivered by a double bench comprising Justices Suresh Thakur and Vikas Suri late on Thursday evening.

The election process, which began on December 14, had been halted following a writ petition filed on December 19. The single bench of the High Court had postponed the elections and imposed a stay on the process.

According to MLA Davinderjit Singh Laddi Dhos, 36 candidates had filed nominations for the elections, with 13 being unanimously elected after the withdrawal of some nominations. Certificates were issued to the winners.

However, an opposition candidate, unhappy with the outcome, filed a petition challenging the process.

Addressing a press conference, the MLA stated that the High Court not only lifted the stay but also upheld the legitimacy of the election process.

The court has directed the government to constitute the Dharamkot Municipal Council promptly.
