High Court reprimands Punjab Election Commission over panchayat elections
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has criticized the Punjab Election Commission for its delay in releasing the schedule for the panchayat elections. The High Court bench stated that the schedule must be submitted by tomorrow in every case. Failure to do so will result in the commissioner himself appearing in court with the election report.
A petition concerning a panchayat by-election in Punjab prompted the High Court to take action, ordering a re-conduction of the elections when they couldn’t proceed due to unforeseen reasons. Subsequently, a defamation petition was filed against the government in court. During the hearing of this petition, the High Court displayed a firm stance.
