Hoshiarpur jail superintendent suspended over drug racket allegations
Chandigarh: The Punjab Prisons Department on Thursday suspended Hoshiarpur Central Jail superintendent Baljit Singh Ghuman amid the state government’s ongoing crackdown on drugs. Ghuman is accused of running a drug racket inside the jail and engaging in other illegal activities.
His suspension follows an investigation by the intelligence wing of the prison department.
According to an order issued by ADGP (Prisons) Arunpal Singh, the Intelligence Branch launched a probe after a clash between inmates, uncovering the alleged drug racket and other illicit operations.
A case has been registered, and authorities have directed the police and administrative departments to take further action against Ghuman. Officials stated that he was suspended immediately to prevent any tampering with evidence.
The development comes after the mysterious death of an inmate on February 25, raising concerns about the jail administration’s role. Following the incident, security in the prison has been tightened, and police have been put on high alert.
A forensic team is examining the site, and a high-level investigation has been launched to ensure transparency. Officials have assured strict action against those found guilty, with a detailed report expected soon.
