INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATED AT THE MAHARAJA BHUPINDER SINGH PUNJAB SPORT UNIVERSITY
Patiala News: The Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University and Professor Gursewak Singh Government College of Physical Education, Patiala celebrated the International Women’s Day in a befitting manner on 06 March 2024. The Chief Guest was distinguished women IAS Officer of Punjab, Smt. Amrit Gill, Special Secretary, Agriculture and Farmers ‘Welfare and in addition Secretary, Punjab State Agricultural Marketing Board, while Dr. Simrat Kaur, former Principal, Professor Gursewak Government College of Physical Education and Mohindera College Patiala, and IRS officer Smt. Taniya Bains, Deputy Commissioner GST, Patiala were the Guests of Honour. Meenu Devi – a student of Saint Soldier College of Physical Education, Jalandhar- an affiliated college of the University who recently climbed Mount Everest was a special invitee. The University and College students staged an impactful event highlighting the International Women’s Day 2024 theme INVEST IN WOMEN, ACCELERATE PROGRESS.
The celebration commenced with a soulful performance of Saraswati Vandana invoking the blessings of the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, and art, followed by a captivating theme dance that artistically conveyed the struggles, triumphs, and empowerment of women through graceful movements and powerful expressions. The students highlighted the Sports Women’s Achievers of India, with specific reference to the achievers of Punjab. The success stories of Harmanpreet Kaur in Cricket, Gurjit Kaur in Hockey, Sift Kaur Samra in Shooting, and many others were highlighted. The milestones achieved by other prominent women of Punjab, like Amrita Pritam, Surinder-Prakash Kaur, Dolly Guleria and a host of others were also shared. Their stories of courage, perseverance, and success served as a beacon of inspiration for everyone present.
The speeches by the distinguished Chief Guest and Guests of Honour shed light on the challenges and achievements of women in the bureaucratic sphere, inspiring the audience to strive for gender equality, empowerment, and leadership in all aspects of life. Adding a touch of vast experience to the event, Dr. Simrat Kaur, a former Principal of the Professor Gursewak Government College of Physical Education, shared her thoughts on female empowerment, leadership, and breaking barriers. Meenu Devi, a courageous student highlighted her awe-inspiring feat of conquering Mount Everest. In her stirring Haryanvi speech, she shared her journey of determination, perseverance, and triumph over adversity, inspiring everyone present to aim for the peaks of their dreams and aspirations.
Adding a touch of joy and celebration to the event, the girl students electrified the audience by a vibrant Bhangra performance, signifying gender equality in performing the traditional men’s event. The high-energy dance moves and infectious beats brought a sense of camaraderie and shared joy among the audience, reinforcing the spirit of unity and celebration.
Lt. Gen (Dr.) J.S Cheema, the Vice-Chancellor in his closing remarks reflected on the inspiring journey of women from becoming empowered to achieving gender equality. He emphasized the need for creating a supportive and inclusive environment that uplifts and honours the contribution of women in all fields. The event concluded with a collective commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive society.
