Iron traders in Punjab launch 5-day strike against pollution control board orders

Chandigarh: Mandi Gobindgarh, a key hub of the iron industry in Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab, is observing a shutdown from December 11 to 15 as industrialists protest against orders issued by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).

The strike, organized under the banner of a local union, challenges the board’s directive to shift from coal to piped natural gas (PNG) for operations. Protesters have termed the order a “dictatorial decree” and argue that it imposes an undue burden on the industry.

The demonstration comes just ahead of a December 17 hearing at the National Green Tribunal (NGT) regarding the mandated transition to PNG.

Industrialists have expressed concerns over the financial and logistical challenges posed by the new regulations.
