Jalandhar Bypoll: BJP announces Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal as its candidate
Punjab News: Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal, son of former Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal, will be the BJP’s candidate in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-election. The BJP announced his name late on Wednesday night. Atwal had joined the BJP three days ago.
Last week, he had announced his decision to quit the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Atwal’s chances of contesting the elections were rife ever since the party’s national president J P Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah themselves inducted him into the Pune-based party.
With the announcement of Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal’ name, the picture of Jalandhar Lok Sabha elections has become very clear. Four big candidates are now in the fray in the bypoll. These include Karamjit Kaur Chaudhary of the Congress, Sushil Kumar Rinku of the Aam Aadmi Party, Dr. Sukhwinder Sukhi of the Akali Dal-BSP and Inder Iqbal Singh Atwal of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Santokh Singh Chaudhary, Congress MP from Jalandhar, passed away in January this year during his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’. Voting for the seat, which fell vacant after his death, will be held on May 10 and the results will be out on May 13.
