Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia becomes Amritsar mayor
Amritsar: Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been elected as the new Mayor of Amritsar. Priyanka Sharma has been appointed as Senior Deputy Mayor, and Anita Rani as Deputy Mayor.
In the 85-ward Municipal Corporation, a majority of 46 councillors was required to secure the mayor’s post.
While the Congress emerged as the largest party with 40 councillors, AAP, with 24 councillors, claimed the support of 7 independents and 2 BJP councillors, enabling Bhatia’s win. Despite claiming support from 41 councillors, Congress failed to secure the position.
Speaking after his victory, Moti Bhatia expressed gratitude to AAP leadership and MLAs for their support. He pledged to address Amritsar’s core issues, focusing on improving cleanliness and sewerage systems in the city.
Jasbir Singh, MLA from Amritsar West, congratulated Bhatia and AAP’s Punjab leadership, calling the victory a testament to the party’s growing influence in the state.
