Mohali building collapse: Death toll rises to 2, rescue operations continue

Chandigarh: The death toll in the Mohali multistorey building collapse has risen to two after another body was recovered early Sunday.

The incident, which occurred Saturday evening, left three people still trapped under the debris, according to officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

The first victim, a girl rescued alive on Saturday night, later succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. Rescue operations involving the NDRF and Army teams have been ongoing since 5 PM Saturday.

Officials confirmed that five people—three boys and two girls—were buried under the rubble.

A video of the collapse has surfaced, showing the building reduced to rubble. Investigators also recovered the building’s CCTV DVR from the debris, which has been included in police records.

Authorities believe it could provide crucial details about those present at the time of the collapse.

The rescue mission faces additional challenges as sewer water has flooded the site, further reducing the chances of survival for those still trapped.

According to a gym trainer who survived, the building housed gyms on three floors, while the other two floors were rented out as residences. Among the deceased is Abhishek, a gym-goer whose body was recovered Sunday morning. His wife, who arrived at the site searching for him, said his phone had been unreachable since the incident.
