Panjab University students injured in police lathi-charge amid protest over delayed senate elections
Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann arrived at Panjab University on Wednesday amid heightened security, following a clash between protesting students and police that left several students injured.
The confrontation erupted as students attempted to gherao the Vice Chancellor’s residence in protest over the delay in university senate elections.
For the past month, students have staged a sit-in outside the Vice Chancellor’s office, demanding timely senate elections. When students advanced toward the VC’s residence, they were met with resistance from police, leading to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
Tensions ran high as the altercation unfolded outside the university’s law department.
Chief Minister Mann, who was present at the university’s Law Auditorium, faced mounting pressure from students seeking government intervention. Security has been significantly tightened across the campus, with a large contingent of police deployed to manage the situation.
