Punjab bans batch of normal saline after patients fall ill in Sangrur hospital

Chandigarh: The Punjab government has banned the use of a specific batch of normal saline (IV fluid) after some patients at Sangrur Civil Hospital experienced health complications.

The health department swiftly responded to the incident, restricting the use of the affected batch in hospitals across the state.

Punjab’s Principal Secretary for Health and Family Welfare, Kumar Rahul, visited Sangrur Civil Hospital to assess the condition of women patients admitted to the gynecology ward.

He met with their family members and doctors, later informing the media that he had spoken to 14 patients, all of whom were in stable condition.

Rahul said three patients had initially faced health issues after receiving the normal saline, but hospital staff provided immediate treatment, and none required referral to another facility.

He confirmed that the drug inspector is collecting samples of the IV fluid for laboratory testing, with results expected within two to three days.

If the samples are found to be substandard, action will be taken against the supplier or firm responsible, he said. MLA Narinder Kaur Bharaj also visited the hospital to review the situation.
