Punjab BJP chief urges PM to reconsider land allocation to Haryana for new assembly building in Chandigarh
Chandigarh: Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar has raised strong objections over the allotment of land for Haryana’s new assembly building in Chandigarh, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the decision.
Jakhar expressed concerns that this move could harm Punjab’s interests, emphasizing that Chandigarh holds deep sentimental value for the people of Punjab.
In a post on social media platform X, Jakhar acknowledged the Prime Minister’s prior efforts to address Punjab’s social and religious concerns, but he argued that granting Haryana 10 acres in Chandigarh risks undermining these initiatives.
“This decision should be reconsidered to preserve the strong ties between Punjab and the Centre,” he said, urging the Prime Minister to personally intervene.
Jakhar also criticized Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for allegedly failing to protect Punjab’s claim to Chandigarh. He claimed that during a Northern Zonal Council meeting in Jaipur, Mann did not oppose Haryana’s request for land, even supporting it by requesting a similar allocation for the Punjab Legislative Assembly.
Jakhar suggested that this stance weakens Punjab’s claim to the city and disregards the unity of Punjab’s political parties on this issue.
Amid rising political tensions, Jakhar argued that the issue of Chandigarh remains a critical and emotional one for Punjab, and the decision merits careful reconsideration to avoid damaging Punjab’s connection to the region.
