Punjab government assigns registry work to PCS officers amid tehsildar strike

Chandigarh: The Punjab government has decided to transfer registry-related work in tehsils to PCS officers and kanungos or senior assistants, as revenue officers continue their strike against vigilance action.

Financial Commissioner Revenue has issued a letter to all Deputy Commissioners, instructing them to assign the work to the designated officers in places where revenue officials are not working.

Meanwhile, the state government has given an ultimatum to striking tehsildars, asking them to return to duty by 5 pm today. It warned that those failing to comply would face action, with probationary officers at risk of dismissal.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann reiterated his firm stance against the strike in a post on X. He stated that alternative arrangements were being made in tehsils to ensure public services were not disrupted, while the government’s anti-corruption drive would continue.

“The tehsildars are on strike in support of their corrupt colleagues, but our government is firmly against bribery,” Mann said. “To prevent inconvenience to the public, other tehsil officers are being assigned all tehsil-related work. Happy mass holiday to tehsildars, but they will have to decide when and where to rejoin after the holiday.”
