Punjab police to check criminal records of deported Indian migrants from US

Chandigarh: Punjab Police DGP Gaurav Yadav said the state government and police will adopt a lenient and friendly approach toward illegal Indian immigrants deported from the US, but their criminal records will be verified, and further action will be taken accordingly.

A US military cargo ship carrying the deported migrants has departed for India, with their arrival in Amritsar expected tomorrow at 8 am. Police teams have been deployed to gather background details of their illegal immigration.

An official stated that the deported individuals could provide crucial information about human trafficking networks and the exploitation of migrants through the Dunky route. Authorities aim to uncover how travel agents deceive people into illegal migration.

Responding to questions on how the police would handle over 200 deported migrants arriving on a special flight, the DGP said their identities and legal status are yet to be confirmed.

He added that Punjab Police is in touch with central agencies, which are also expected to interrogate the migrants upon arrival at Amritsar airport.
