Rajoana begins hunger strike in jail, sister arrives for meeting

Patiala: Balwant Singh Rajoana, who has been lodged in the Central Jail Patiala for 27 years, has started a hunger strike today as per his announcement. He did not catch the morning bread given by the jail administration. He is demanding that the mercy petition filed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) 12 years ago with the President for commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment be withdrawn.
Refusing to withdraw the petition, the SGPC has also announced to hold a protest in Delhi on December 20 in collaboration with Sikh bodies.
A day earlier, former minister Bikram Majithia and former MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha had come to meet Rajoana to avert the hunger strike, but the jail administration did not allow him to meet him. Meanwhile, Rajoana’s sister Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana arrived here today to meet him in the jail.
