Registration of vehicles in Punjab becomes costlier, green tax on old and private vehicles

Chandigarh: The cost of vehicle registration in Punjab has increased due to the implementation of a green tax across the state. The new tax policy, which has been officially notified, applies to non-transport vehicles during the renewal of their registration certificates (RCs).

The tax rates differ based on the type of fuel used by the vehicle, with separate categories for diesel and petrol-powered vehicles.

Owners of petrol two-wheelers older than 15 years will now have to pay Rs 500, while diesel two-wheeler owners will be charged Rs 1,000. For four-wheelers under 1500 cc, petrol vehicles will be taxed Rs 3,000, and diesel vehicles will face a charge of Rs 4,000.

Larger vehicles, such as 1500 cc petrol two-wheelers, will incur a fee of Rs 4,000, while their diesel counterparts will be charged Rs 6,000.

Vehicles running on alternative fuels such as LPG, CNG, battery, or solar power are exempt from the green tax. The new tax rates are expected to impact vehicle owners across the state as Punjab pushes for greener alternatives to reduce pollution.
