SAD opposes municipal elections during Shaheedi Fortnight
Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has urged the Punjab government and the State Election Commission to avoid scheduling municipal elections during the martyrdom fortnight of Guru Gobind Singh’s four sahibzadas and Mata Gujri, observed from December 15 to 31.
Senior Akali Dal leader and former minister Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema expressed concern over the timing, stating on his social media account, “Holding elections during Shaheedi Fortnight will disturb the holy atmosphere and hurt the religious sentiments of the people.”
The Local Government Department of Punjab recently issued a notification regarding elections for four municipal corporations and 44 municipal councils.
The Punjab State Election Commission is expected to announce the election schedule soon, with dates likely to fall in December.
