Separated cousins reunite after 76 years: Read emotional tail of Mohammad Ismail and Surinder Kaur
Punjab News: The cousins, who were separated 76 years ago at the time of partition of India, got emotional in the Kartarpur corridor.
A Pakistani official said that this was possible only through social media.
Mohammad Ismail and his sister Surinder Kaur are currently around 80 years old. Both of them reached Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan on Sunday to pay obeisance. During this time they met.
An official of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) said that the administration of Kartarpur Sahib facilitated the reunion of the cousins and also distributed sweets and langar to them.
Ismail hails from Pakistan’s Sahiwal district, about 200 km from Lahore, and Surinder Kaur lives in Jalandhar, India. The families of Ismail and Surinder Kaur were living in Shahkot in Jalandhar district before partition.
Met through social media
A Pakistani YouTube channel had posted Ismail’s story on social media, following which an Australian Sardar Mission Singh contacted him and told him about the missing family members in India. Mission Singh gave Ismail Surinder Kaur’s telephone number, after which the two siblings spoke and decided to meet at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib through the Kartarpur corridor.
It is noteworthy that Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent his last time in Gurdwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib. Sikhs living all over the world come here to pay their respects.
The gurdwara is connected to Dera Baba Nanak shrine in Gurdaspur district through a four-km-long corridor between India and Pakistan. Devotees can come through this corridor without a visa. However, it is mandatory to show them the passport.
