Set back to INDIA bloc, BJP’s Manoj Sonkar elected mayor of Chandigarh
Chandigarh: The BJP has once again secured the position of mayor, triumphing over the INDIA alliance in the election for the mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The direct contest between India and the BJP resulted in the BJP candidate garnering 16 votes, surpassing the joint candidate who received 12 votes. A BJP councillor mentioned that eight votes have not been rejected, and crosses are lying.
The municipal corporation comprises 35 councillors, with the India alliance, consisting of the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress, having 20 councillors, while the BJP holds 14 councillors. The alliance’s mayoral candidate is Kuldeep Tita, and the BJP had nominated Manoj Sonkar.
During the vote counting process, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party councillors created a ruckus, expressing concerns about potential irregularities. Slogans were also raised against the presiding officer on the occasion.
