SGPC rejects resolution to expel Khalistani supporter Narayan Singh Chaura from Panth
Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Monday reversed its earlier resolution urging the expulsion of Khalistani supporter Narayan Singh Chaura from the Panth. Chaura had been arrested for allegedly attacking Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal.
The SGPC’s internal committee had initially passed a resolution requesting the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht to expel Chaura. However, the resolution was overturned during an inter-committee meeting held today.
The meeting also extended the timeframe of the inquiry committee investigating complaints against Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar, Giani Harpreet Singh.
The SGPC strongly condemned the recent killing of three youths from Punjab in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district and demanded a judicial inquiry.
In a resolution passed during the meeting chaired by SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, the committee raised concerns over the encounters, describing them as a “deliberate targeting of Punjab’s youth.”
The committee also rejected a December 9 resolution calling for Chaura’s expulsion and extended the tenure of the inquiry into Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh by one month.
The extension comes as the SGPC prepares for upcoming elections to the Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee.
