Sidhu likely to be released before completion of sentence
Chandigarh: Former cricketer and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is serving a one-year jail term in a three-and-a-half-decade-old road accident-related case, is likely to be released before the scheduled time.
Under the central government’s policy for the release of prisoners under the celebrations of ‘Amrit Mahotsav of Independence’, he can get this benefit.
In the first phase, several prisoners have been released on August 15, while in the second phase, more prisoners will be released on January 26, 2023.
Sidhu will serve 250 days in jail till January 25, 2023, while the number of days required for his release comes to 241.
It may be recalled that the central government has included various columns on the advance release of prisoners under the said scheme, such as the release of 50-year-old women and 60-year-old male prisoners who have served 50 per cent of the total jail term.
If a person serving half the sentence is 70 per cent disabled, he will also be released. Similarly, many other aids have also been put in place.
