Sukhbir Badal’s resignation likely to be accepted in January as term ends

Chandigarh: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal’s resignation is expected to be accepted in the first week of January, following the conclusion of his term on December 14. The party has also announced plans to launch a membership drive in the new year.

A meeting involving the core committee, executive members, district presidents, and halka in-charges was held at Sukhbir Badal’s residence in Sector-9 to discuss the party’s future course. Badal’s resignation decision was made after consultations with grassroots leaders, many of whom expressed support for his leadership and confidence in standing by him.

Sukhbir Badal submitted his resignation on December 2, following an order from Sri Akal Takht Sahib, which instructed the executive committee to act on it and inform the Akal Takht Secretariat.

However, the SAD leadership requested time for the executive meeting, citing religious obligations.

During the meeting, party leaders gave a clear indication of initiating a membership drive in the new year. The drive will focus on enrolling grassroots-level workers and individuals loyal to the party’s leadership.
