Tensions rise at Shambhu border as farmers march towards Delhi

Chandigarh: Tensions flared at the Shambhu border as a third group of 101 farmers, marching under the ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement, faced resistance from Haryana police.

The farmers attempted to breach barricades, prompting the police to deploy tear gas and water cannons, leaving 15 farmers injured. Reports also suggest that a farmer was struck by a rubber bullet.

Kisan Union spokesperson Tejveer Singh Panjokhara alleged that Ambala police directly shot one of the protesters.

Despite the clashes, farmers remained resolute in their demand to march towards Delhi. “SP Sahib, we want to march peacefully. Please give us a way on the road,” a farmer leader appealed to police officers through the barricades.

Ambala Superintendent of Police dismissed the farmers’ pleas, citing a Supreme Court-appointed committee’s mandate to maintain the status quo.

The officer referenced a July 24 border stand-off and informed the protesters that a High-Power Committee meeting would take place within 3-4 days, with the next hearing scheduled for December 18.

The situation remains tense as farmers continue their push for the right to march peacefully.
