Union government withdraws Z-plus security cover for Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh
Chandigarh: The central government has withdrawn the Z-category security cover for Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, following his own request.
This change, confirmed by the Jathedar, reduces his security to that provided by the Punjab government and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).
The central government had issued orders for the withdrawal a day or two ago, prompting Jathedar Singh to return his Z-category security detail.
Jaspal Singh, former personal assistant to Giani Harpreet Singh, explained that the Jathedar initially received Z-category protection from the central government two years ago when Punjab Police reduced his security.
At the time, he served as the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht. This Z-category arrangement included about 21 security personnel, who were formally relieved yesterday.
The Jathedar had reportedly sent multiple letters to the central government requesting the security reduction. Though no specific reason was cited for the withdrawal, some speculate that criticism surrounding his central government-provided security could have influenced his decision.
