Outstanding debt Rs 2.82 lakh crore: Punjab needs to cut debt and freebies to stable its economy

Punjab E News (New Delhi):-  Punjab's public debt is burgeoning at its seams. The state has would land in a financial soup amid to implement poll promises in the state. 

    Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government announced to provide 300 free power units in Punjab from July 1 that will further put financial burden on the already reeling under burden. 

     The AAP had promised to give Rs 1,000 a month to every woman in Punjab and it would cost the exchequer an extra Rs 20,000 crore a year.

     It would add woes to the ruling government as Punjab’s outstanding debt has risen by Rs 1 lakh crore in the last five years to Rs 2.82 lakh crore.

     Punjab has highest debt-to-GSDP ratio in 2021-22 include Punjab (53.3 per cent) across the country followed by Rajasthan (39.8 per cent), West Bengal (38.8 per cent), Kerala (38.3 per cent) and Andhra Pradesh (32.4 per cent).

     There is an intrinsic need to generate revenue otherwise, the state would face more financial troubles.
