Trial begins in sacrilege case against Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh
Chandigarh: The trial against Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and others in the 2015 sacrilege cases commenced today in a Chandigarh court. The proceedings resumed after the Supreme Court lifted a stay imposed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on October 18.
Ram Rahim, currently lodged in Sunaria jail in Rohtak, appeared before the court via video conferencing. Lawyers for the accused requested the court to provide relevant documents related to the case.
The trial pertains to three sacrilege incidents involving the Guru Granth Sahib in Bargari, Punjab. In February 2023, the Supreme Court ordered the transfer of the case from Faridkot to Chandigarh, citing security concerns.
