SC rejects plea to open highways blocked by farmers, including Shambhu border
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has dismissed a fresh Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the reopening of all highways blocked by ongoing farmers’ protests, including the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana.
During the hearing, the apex court questioned the need for repetitive petitions on the matter, stating that the issue is already under judicial consideration. The court clarified that it is not inclined to entertain new petitions as a case addressing the matter is currently being heard.
The PIL sought directives for the Centre, Punjab, and Haryana governments to ensure the reopening of highways and take legal action against those blocking them. It argued that such obstructions violate fundamental rights and contravene provisions of the National Highways Act.
The Shambhu border remains closed due to farmers’ protests, with no immediate resolution in sight.
