One dead, 20 rescued after tourist boat capsizes off Goa’s Calangute beach
Goa: A tourist boat capsized in the Arabian Sea near Calangute beach in north Goa today, resulting in the death of a 54-year-old man. Twenty others, including two children and a six-month-old baby, were rescued, police confirmed.
The incident occurred around 1:30 pm, with the boat capsizing approximately 60 metres from the shore, according to a senior police officer. “Most passengers were wearing life jackets except for two,” the officer added.
Drishti Marine, the government-appointed life-saving agency, reported that 13 members of a family from Khed, Maharashtra, were among those onboard. Upon witnessing the incident, a Drishti Marine employee initiated rescue efforts, quickly mobilizing 18 life-saving personnel to bring passengers to safety.
“The injured passengers were given first aid at the scene, while the more severely injured were transported to a nearby health center by ambulance,” a spokesperson from Drishti Marine said.
The rescued individuals, including two children aged six and seven, are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. An investigation into the cause of the capsizing is underway.
