Mumbai attack convict Tahawwur Rana files fresh plea with US Chief Justice after extradition setback
New York: Mumbai terror attack convict Tahawwur Rana has filed a fresh application with US Chief Justice John Roberts after the Supreme Court rejected his plea against extradition to India.
Rana, 64, a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, is currently lodged at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles. On February 27, he had filed a petition in the US Supreme Court seeking a stay on his extradition. However, Justice Elena Kagan dismissed his plea on March 6, according to the Supreme Court website.
Following the rejection, Rana’s lawyers have submitted a fresh application requesting that the case be placed before Chief Justice Roberts instead of Justice Kagan. In his emergency application, Rana sought a stay on extradition based on the merits of his February 13 petition.
Last month, US President Donald Trump had announced during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House that Rana’s extradition to India had been approved.
