NSA on MP Amritpal Singh extended by one year; father calls it ‘unfortunate’

Chandigarh: The National Security Act (NSA) imposed on Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh has been extended by another year. According to sources, official documents related to the extension have been sent to Dibrugarh jail, where Singh is currently lodged.

Reacting to the development, Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, called the extension “unfortunate” and alleged that there seems to be a separate law for Sikhs in the country. He claimed that the move not only undermines democracy but also betrays the voters of the Khadoor Sahib constituency.

Tarsem Singh further questioned the Punjab government’s claim that Amritpal Singh’s release could disturb the law and order situation. He pointed out that despite his son being in jail, the state continues to witness bomb blasts, thefts, robberies, and murders. He said the family was not officially informed by the administration about the extension of the NSA.

He also criticised political parties that, according to him, do not want Amritpal Singh to be released as it might affect their interests. “We demand justice from the courts and administrative authorities, but nothing is being done,” he said.

Senior advocate RS Bains also criticised the Punjab government, calling the third consecutive imposition of the NSA a failure. He said that instead of repeatedly imposing NSA, the government should proceed with trials in all FIRs registered against Singh.

Bains, who had earlier challenged the second NSA order in the High Court, is reportedly preparing to approach the court again.
