Punjab CM warns farmers of strict action over Shambhu police station gherao

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has warned of strict legal action against those involved in the gherao of Shambhu police station, calling such protests anti-people. Taking to social media, Mann said any form of dharna or strike that disrupts the daily lives of the public would not be tolerated.

“Any kind of announcement, dharna or strike that obstructs the daily functioning of the common people in Punjab will be considered as against the public,” Mann wrote. He added that while protests can be held in democratic ways, causing inconvenience to the public is not acceptable and will invite legal consequences.

The warning comes ahead of a planned farmers’ protest on May 6. In a preemptive move, Punjab Police arrested several farmer leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal.

A police team reportedly reached Dallewal’s residence in Faridkot at 4 am on Monday. Dallewal later appeared live on social media to inform his followers about the arrest.

The Chief Minister said the message was issued in the interest of Punjab’s working population and urged all unions and organisations to adopt peaceful methods of protest.
